OUR LIBRARY is central to the learning process and provides St. Anne students with the knowledge and grand ideas that lie within the covers of great books or amid the global village of the Internet. While classroom instruction fosters competence and stimulates interest in reading and using information, the library staff works with the faculty to design learning strategies that meet the needs of individual students. The librarian facilitates the Renaissance Learning programs Accelerated Reader, STAR Reader, and STAR Early Literacy.

Library Mission Statement

Saint Anne Catholic School Library strives to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished by

providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats
providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas

Library Philosophy

The St. Anne Catholic School Library provides materials that promote the love of reading and support the curriculum of the school. The library provides printed, non-printed, and electronic resources for students, faculty, and parents. Students utilize library resources to complete assignments, explore ideas, and to select from a wide variety of recreational reading on many topics. St. Anne students will become critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, informed users of information, and life-long learners.

Library Program

During this special school year, the library will operate on a fixed schedule. We will try to schedule other classes, not just reading classes, to utilize the library. This year, students come to the library with their class to check out a book, explore the internet, research information, or read independently. Teachers work collaboratively with the librarian to schedule research projects and literature-appreciation lessons. Kindergarten through sixth grade have weekly scheduled visits. Seventh through eighth graders will check out books using the 'request and hold' method described above.

LET'S MAKE READING AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE
Just like playing a sport, an instrument, or taking part in another hobby, the more you practice reading the better. reader you will become. Read the genres that interest you. Read non-fiction, fiction, ebooks, poetry, magazines, AND read out loud. Twenty minutes is an appropriate amount of time to read for a child who is an independent reader.

Audiobooks are also a wonderful source. Not only can they be entertaining, audiobooks also allow listeners to hear the explicit sounds of letters and letter patterns that form words. They help students engage in text and improve vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.

Immersive Reading is the most beneficial way for students to read while utilizing audiobooks. Immersive reading is reading along with text or Book while listening to the audiobook. This allows for complete focus on complex and challenging books.

The Texas Bluebonnet Nominee Award book list for grades 3-6 is sponsored by the Texas Library Association solely to encourage voluntary reading of multiple genres. Titles may be read independently, with someone, or to someone. Happy Reading!

Circulation Policy

Kindergarten through second-grade students may check out one book at a time for a two-week period. Third-through eighth-grade students may check out two-three books at a time for a two-week period. Students may have their limit extended for a project or an assignment. Books may be renewed up to two additional times. The student must bring the book to the library in order to renew the book. Students will not be allowed to check out new books during the 4th nine weeks if they have an overdue book still out.

Damaged and Lost Book Policy

Accidents happen! If a book is accidentally damaged, the student should report the damage so that the library may, if possible, repair the book. If a book page accidentally rips, please do not attempt to repair the book at home. The library uses special book tape and glue that resist heat and will not discolor. If a book is lost or damaged beyond use, the student will pay the cost of the book so that it may be replaced in the library.

Be aware of the books your child is reading. Look up the books' interest levels.

What is Interest Level (IL)?

Interest level is based on a book's content, including theme, characterization, and plot. The interest level attached to the book indicates age group appropriateness. Interest level designations reflect the judgment of the book's publisher and the professionals at Renaissance Learning. We group content appropriateness into these categories: LG = Lower Grades (K-3); MG = Middle Grades (4-8); MG+ = Upper Middle Grades (6 and up); and UG = Upper Grades (9-12). Most MG+ books are also marketed as YA (Young Adult) for Interest Level. However, the final decision as to whether the content of a specific book is appropriate for a particular student is the responsibility of school librarians, teachers, and parents.

How do I find the interest level (IL) of a book, and how do I know if a book is on Accelerated Reader?

Simply go to www.arbookfind.com to type in the name of the book or author. You can then search for the particular book and see how many points it is worth for AR, the reading level of the book, and more. It is very important to be aware of the Interest Level (IL) of the book your child is reading.

Accelerated Reader (AR) Program

Grades 1-2

Students in first and second grade take AR quizzes and are guided through this program by their teachers. The AR program sets an annual goal for each student. This goal is an individualized number of passed AR quizzes by the end of the year and is based on the student’s Star Early Lit/Star Reading results and 20-30 minutes a night of reading.

Grades 3-8

For students in grades 3-8, the Accelerated Reader program is part of the student’s Reading/Literature grade.

As a school, we use Renaissance Learning’s built-in logarithm, based on a minimum of 20 minutes/night of independent reading and the student's Star Reading Assessment results, to formulate the student’s AR Point Goal and Reading Range (ZPD) for each quarter.

Two separate CLASSWORK grades are recorded each quarter and derived from the student meeting his/her AR goals.

(1) Points Goal AND (2) 85% Average Percent Correct (APC) Goal.

Virtual Library Options

The St. Anne library is offering more virtual options for our students. Students can request books via our online catalog using their Google Classroom/Gmail username and password. Below are the instructions. Our catalog also includes audio and ebooks that can be downloaded directly to your devices. Students can find and checkout books from our library through Follett Destiny Discover’s OPAC (online public access catalog).

As they find books they'd like to checkout and read, students can place holds on books that are in the library or on books that are currently checked out to another student or teacher.

Type the title, author, series, or genre you are looking for and click on SEARCH.
When the book you are interested in pops up, click on DETAILS to learn about it.
If you decide you would like to check-out this book, place your request by clicking HOLD..
The requested book will be delivered via our book wagon to your homeroom within 24 to 48 hours after it becomes available.
You can click on “My Stuff” on the right hand side, it will show the titles you have checked-out and the titles you have placed on HOLD.
You may place 3 books on hold.
Read your date due slip in the back pocket to learn when your books are due back in the library.
Primary students place returned books in their classroom library bucket.
